How do you choose a team building activity?
Ask three questions before you look at any catalogue.
What should still be there the next day? A shared memory, a skill, a decision made together. Those three need different formats.
Who is in the room? A sales team of 25 who have known each other for ten years does not need an icebreaker. A team formed from two merged companies does.
Who is going to feel left out? That is the question people skip. A sports activity excludes, an activity in English excludes, an activity built around public speaking excludes. Make sure there is a role for everyone.
Ideas for a team that barely knows itself
City wide investigation game. Teams solve a case while moving through a neighbourhood. Two to three hours, 10 to 100 people. It works because roles divide up naturally.
Team cooking workshop. Market, preparation, shared meal. Three to four hours, up to 40 people. The meal at the end does half the work.
Collaborative build. Each team builds one module of a shared object that has to work once assembled. Two hours, no size limit. The moment of truth at assembly is what people talk about afterwards.
Photo challenge. A list of scenes to recreate around the city, in teams. Two hours, up to 80 people. Cheap, and it produces content you can reuse internally.
Ideas for a group that needs to move
Crewed regatta. Sailing boats, one skipper per boat, a short race. Half a day, 12 to 60 people. Nobody needs sailing experience, and hierarchy disappears on a boat.
Coasteering or coastal hike. Progression along the shoreline, jumps and short swims for coasteering, walking for everyone else. Half a day, 8 to 40 people. Keep the walking version for people who would rather stay dry.
Field games. A series of short, varied challenges, physical and otherwise. Two to three hours, no size limit. The most inclusive format when the mix is right.
Beginner surf session. Group lesson on a learners beach. Half a day, up to 30 people. Works best with younger teams.
Ideas to celebrate or say thank you
Dinner in an unusual private venue. A palace, a cellar, a rooftop. The venue makes the evening, not the menu.
Guided tasting. Wine, cheese, local produce, with someone who can tell the story. Ninety minutes, up to 50 people. A calm format that lets people talk.
Themed evening with live music. A local band rather than a playlist. The difference in the quality of the evening is real and the extra cost is small.
Craft workshop. Tile painting, pottery, screen printing. Two hours, up to 30 people. Everyone leaves with the thing they made, which keeps the memory going.
Ideas to get the team working on something real
Mixed team problem solving. A genuine company problem, teams built across departments, a presentation at the end. Half a day. Needs a competent facilitator or it turns into an empty brainstorm.
Internal hackathon. Twenty four hours on a real subject. Demanding, and strong on outcome.
Custom corporate escape room. The scenario uses the company own vocabulary and stakes. More expensive than a standard escape room, considerably more memorable.
Local community action. A charity project, a distribution, a renovation. Half a day. The format that produces the most team pride and the fewest awkward photos.
What does team building cost?
Per person, excluding travel and accommodation:
- 25 to 50 € for a short city activity, investigation or photo challenge
- 50 to 90 € for a supervised workshop, cooking or craft
- 90 to 180 € for a water sport or outdoor activity with instructors

Below 25 € per person you are generally looking at an unsupervised outdoor game. That can work very well, but do not expect it from a supplier.

Making it too long. Two hours of real attention is already a lot after a morning of meetings.
Badly calibrated competition. Unbalanced teams, a single ranking, and you manufacture frustration instead of cohesion.
No time to talk at the end. Fifteen minutes of debrief, even informal, turns an activity into a shared memory.
