Prague if your teams fly from Germany, Austria or Central Europe and the seminar stays indoors. Lisbon as soon as the programme goes outside, the season is low, or you want to avoid the association Prague still carries for some participants.
Flight time, advantage Prague from Germany
It has to be said plainly: from Frankfurt, Munich or Vienna, Prague is far closer than Lisbon. One hour against three. On a two-day seminar that difference weighs.
From Paris, London or Madrid the gap narrows or reverses, and the argument disappears.
If your group leaves mostly from Central Europe and the stay is short, Prague is the rational choice. We tell our German prospects so when that is the case.
Budget
Prague is still cheaper than Lisbon on catering and activities. On accommodation the gap has narrowed a great deal in recent years, central Prague having become very much in demand.
One practical point in Lisbon’s favour: Portugal is in the eurozone, the Czech Republic is not. It uses the koruna. On a corporate seminar that means expense claims in a foreign currency, exchange rates to manage and heavier supplier payments for your finance team. Not a deal-breaker, one more piece of friction.
Climate, a clear advantage to Lisbon
This is the biggest gap between the two cities.
Prague has cold winters from November to March, which in practice rules out any outdoor activity in that window. Its summers are pleasant but short.
Lisbon runs around 15 degrees in January and allows outdoor programmes eight months a year. For a January or February seminar, the difference in what you can programme is enormous.
Image, the subject nobody raises
Prague carries a stag-party reputation that still sticks to it in several European countries. On a board-level seminar or a client event, several of our contacts have told us they wanted to avoid the destination for that reason alone.
It is neither fair nor representative of the city, which is superb and properly equipped for corporate events. But it is a real factor in a decision, and better raised at the table than discovered in committee.
What each has that is specific
Prague: exceptional architecture in a very compact area, remarkable historic venues available for private hire, and a brewing scene that makes good team building programmes.
Lisbon: the ocean, the Tagus, Sintra, and the ability to put a group outside almost all year.
So which one?
Prague if your teams come from Central Europe, the seminar lasts two days, and the programme stays indoors.
Lisbon if the seminar falls between October and April, if the programme goes outside, if your teams come from Western Europe, or if the image of the destination is a topic in your company.
